For mid-sized commercial builders in NZ and Australia

The BuildPass Alternative Built for Commercial Builders in Australia and New Zealand

Built for site sign-ins. Not for your commercials.

BuildPass is a site compliance app now bolting on estimating and finance, with its finance module in early access since July 2026 and its growth focus shifting to the US. Deep Space was built as one platform from day one for mid-sized commercial builders in Australia and New Zealand: construction programme, takeoff to estimate, procurement, commercials, reporting, client and subcontractor portals, DS Site and KAI. Not an afterthought. DS Site already runs on the phones of thousands of site workers.

One platform vs the stack

Many BuildPass Builders Still Run a Second System. One Platform Replaces All of It

Many builders run BuildPass on site alongside Procore, Jonas, Jobpac or CATProjects for documents and financials, a connector to get bills into Xero, and spreadsheets for forecasting. Every join is another login, another subscription, and another place where the numbers drift apart.

Site in one system, money in another. The same subbie, variation and invoice keyed into both.

Deep Space
One platform from tender to final claim, office to site. Xero stays your ledger.
"You need to have like an all-in-one or all-encompassing piece of software."

What's actually native in Deep Space:

  • Native Xero sync for contacts, bills, invoices, payment status and tracking categories, including regional P&L by department.
  • Quantity takeoffs measured on the drawings flow into the estimate, then the budget, so tender pricing is never re-keyed.
  • Native programme module that ingests MS Project files and drives the procurement schedule, so nothing is let late.
  • DS Site, already used by thousands of site workers, covers inductions, SWMS sign-on, incidents, inspections and daily site sign-in, connected to the commercials.

5 Reasons ANZ Commercial Builders Choose Deep Space Over BuildPass

Not a feature checklist. The five things mid-sized commercial builders tell us when they're comparing BuildPass to Deep Space.

What matters

Where it started

Site safety and compliance: sign-ons, inductions, SWMS and subcontractor insurances. Estimating and finance added in 2026.

One platform from day one: programme, takeoff to estimate, procurement, commercials, reporting, DS Site and KAI. Nothing bolted on.

Market focus

Expanding into the US, with a US office in Austin and integrations with QuickBooks and Sage Intacct.

Australia and New Zealand only. Built, supported and road-mapped here, around ANZ contracts, GST and Xero.

Commercial depth

Finance module in early access since July 2026. WIP reporting and cash forecasting marked coming soon.

Live cost to complete, WIP, SOPA and CCA payment schedules, retention release and NZS 3910 and AS 4000 contracts, in production today.

Invoices and AI

AI bill capture and coding in the new Pay module, syncing bills to Xero.

KAI reads every invoice and claim from your AP inbox. Approvals route by role and dollar limit. Bills land in Xero automatically.

Portals

Builders tell us it has a basic client portal and no real subcontractor portal.

Client and subcontractor portals: subbies submit claims and clients get visibility, without the email chains.

Site vs money

BuildPass Is Bolting On. Deep Space Was Built Whole From Day One.

BuildPass built its name on site sign-ins, inductions and SWMS. Estimating and finance only arrived in July 2026, and the finance module is still in early access, with WIP reporting and cash forecasting marked coming soon. Meanwhile its growth capital is going into the US market.

Deep Space was built as one platform from day one: construction programme, takeoff to estimate, procurement, commercials, reporting, site tools and KAI, all on one thread of cost. CCA and SOPA compliant claims and payment schedules, NZS 3910 and AS 4000 contract frameworks, GST, native Xero and local support. Nothing is re-keyed and nothing was added as an afterthought.

"We were hoping that BuildPass might solve for that, but it doesn't really have an appropriate, I guess, form or anything like that for keeping track of variations."

  • Finance module launched July 2026, still in early access.
  • WIP reporting and cash forecasting still marked coming soon.
  • Growth focus on the US, with a US office in Austin.
  • Client and subcontractor portals. Subbies submit claims. Clients get visibility.
  • Native Xero sync. Contacts, bills, invoices and paid status. No middleware.
  • CCA and SOPA compliant claims. Payment schedules, sliding retention, NZS 3910 and AS 4000.

What builders actually say
(...some very real conversations)

From real evaluation and implementation calls with commercial builders across Australia and New Zealand.

"For me, coming into it pretty cold as well, it looks like a pretty impressive platform."
Project team, NZ commercial builder
"It's sort of smarter than what I expected. What I did basically on purpose was I made some real simple purchase order, giving as little detail as possible, but I still managed to pick it up, which is great."
Finance team, Auckland commercial builder, on the KAI invoice inbox
"We've got multiple systems running the company, so we feel this is an opportunity to sort of get our tech stack a lot closer and a lot more streamlined."
Director, Auckland commercial builder
"BuildPass has a basic client portal. Again, doesn't really have a subcontracted portal."
Finance lead, Victorian builder
AI built in

KAI Does the Data Entry. Your Team Does the Checking.

BuildPass calls itself AI-native, and its AI bill capture arrived with the Pay module in 2026. In Deep Space, KAI already reads invoices and subcontractor claims for ANZ builders, inside the same platform that issues the payment schedule and pushes the bill to Xero.

KAI is built into the Deep Space invoice inbox. It reads every invoice and subcontractor claim that lands in your AP mailbox, pulls out the supplier, amounts, GST and line items, suggests the project and matches the order. Your team reviews and approves, and the bill goes to Xero.

"We have an army of people sitting in an office, manually dragging PDFs off emails and trying to match up, like in the 1960s."
Leadership team, Auckland commercial builder

What KAI does in your AP inbox

What matters

Capture

AI bill capture in the Pay module, in early access.

Invoices and claims read straight from your AP mailbox, with the PDF alongside the data.

Coding

AI suggests cost codes and cost types.

Supplier, invoice number, GST and line items extracted. Project suggested.

Matching

Matched within Pay, new in 2026.

Matched to PO lines or the subcontract schedule of values, with over-commitment warnings.

Payment

Bills and invoices sync to Xero.

Delegation of Authority by role and dollar limit, a SOPA or CCA payment schedule for subbies, then a Bill to Pay in Xero with the invoice attached.

Going live

Three weeks. Hands-on.
Built around your project.

Most platforms are places teams go to file documents and generate reports after the work has already happened. Deep Space is where the work runs, with intelligence built into every workflow.

Programme to reporting, side by side

What matters

Construction programme

Scheduling in the Standard tier

Native programme: ingest MS Project, baseline, live lookahead, and it drives the procurement schedule

Takeoff to estimate

Takeoff and estimating in the new Win module, launched July 2026

Quantity takeoffs measured on the drawings, synced into the BoQ and estimate, then into the budget

Reporting

Sign-ons and checklists, with finance in a separate, early-access module

DS Site, used by thousands of site workers, lands sign-ins, inductions, SWMS, diaries and photos in the project, next to the commercials

"We want it where all the emails and all the documentation and correspondence is in the one place."
Finance lead, Victorian builder
Honest about it: What Deep Space doesn't try to do.

We're not pretending to win in every dimension. Here's what we tell you straight, including where BuildPass is still catching up.

Worker app: Theirs is simple. So is ours.

BuildPass has a simple worker app and a large subcontractor network. DS Site is just as quick on site and is already used by thousands of workers across ANZ, with sign-in that can require inductions and today's SWMS before anyone gets on. If site sign-on is the only thing you need, either works. If you also run claims, variations and payment schedules, that's where Deep Space goes further.

US market: We're not going there.

BuildPass is putting its growth capital into the US and connecting to US accounting systems like QuickBooks and Sage Intacct. Deep Space isn't chasing the US. We're built and supported in Australia and New Zealand, around SOPA, the CCA, NZS 3910, AS 4000, GST and Xero.

Accounting: We're built around Xero.

Deep Space integrates natively with Xero and keeps it as your ledger. If you're on MYOB or another accounting system, ask us before you assume it's a fit.

BuildPass, in builders' own words

Credit where it's due: builders tell us BuildPass does the site side well. What they raise is everything around it.

"SharePoint is our master control, but for on-site, it's BuildPass."
Director, Victorian commercial builder
"The site team, they like BuildPass a bit more on the diary side of things, but all the contractual stuff [sits in Procore]."
Accounts team, Queensland builder
"There is limited sort of functions on site, but it's what they need to operate on site."
Finance lead, Victorian builder
"I use the BuildPass system... but I'd really like to see all that integrated into Deep Space."
Contracts administrator, Queensland commercial builder
