I have spent my whole career between a construction site and a software team. The question has never changed: why can't a builder run a complete business on one platform instead of a dozen, and why can't we do it better, faster and cheaper than anyone else?

I trained as a mechatronics engineer, a discipline built on one idea: the parts only matter if they work together. Then I spent years on live sites. Data centres, hospitals, commercial builds. A project does not lose money on the big decisions. It loses money in the small gaps, and everyone is working hard while the margin quietly leaks between the systems.

Running those businesses, I was the one buying the software. The first time I saw the site and the office working off the same record, it landed. Not because the software was clever, but because the arguing stopped. So I stopped buying it and went to help build it. I joined Simpro as founding Global CRO and helped take it from a startup to a global unicorn.

What I learned there is what the industry still refuses to learn. Builders adopt software fast when it fits how they work. They will not bend the business around a platform designed for somewhere else, priced for an enterprise and rolled out over eighteen months. And nobody was building the whole thing for the mid-tier, in one place, at a price they could say yes to.

Luke and Michael had reached the same conclusion from the design side, building BIM software for tier-1 contractors. Same problem, opposite end of the project. The difference was that tier-1 had a budget to throw at it and the mid-sized builder had none. Today builders and subcontractors across Australia and New Zealand run their whole business on Deep Space. I still spend most of my week on the phone to them, and most of the best things we have shipped started as somebody's complaint.
